Once you get into the groove, it's time to start planning your next steps.
What are your goals over the next 12 months?
What about the next 2-3 years?
Are there other career paths or advancement opportunities that interest you?
Just like at the start of your transition, it's important to have a plan in place to guide this new chapter. Start thinking about what you want to accomplish over the next year, set milestones, and determine the tasks it will take to make it a reality.
As a final note, check to see if your employer has a veteran/military-focused employee group. Common in larger companies, this is a fantastic way to meet other veterans within the company and may offer opportunities to get involved in veteran/military focused initiatives.
Company-based employee groups are also a way to gain additional experience and skills outside of your core work. They may offer opportunities to take on volunteer work that aligns with future career aspirations of yours.
For example, if you’re a data analyst looking to pivot into project management, there may be opportunities to plan company veteran-outreach projects. This experience can be annotated on your resume. Additionally, it can create networking connections that could lead to future opportunities.
