Searching and applying to jobs can feel like a monster task.
The time and effort put in can feel like a full-time job in itself.
There are a few things to keep in mind throughout the process. Understanding these will allow you to set proper expectations and anticipate the path ahead:
Depending on the company, industry, and job, the time between applying to receiving an offer can vary from a few days to multiple months.
You may not receive updates on your candidate status for every application.
Expect the process of job searching, customizing your resume, and completing applications to take longer than anticipated. Focus on quality over quantity for the best results.
It's up to you, not the recruiter or interviewers, to translate your military experience, skills, and accomplishments into terms anyone can understand.
Some days will bring feelings of being overwhelmed and beat down while others will bring joy and excitement.
Many companies promote military hiring, but military service isn't a free pass to any job. You still need to demonstrate how you are the most qualified candidate for the job.
Many companies have employee referral programs, which can improve your chances of securing an interview. This is one of many reasons why it's important to start building a diverse network early on. You never know where a connection can lead!
While some of these may seem disheartening, it's important to stay rooted in reality. These will help to build the resiliency and fortitude needed on those tough days.
Having clear and realistic expectations will only help as you take the first step in this new chapter. That first step many include actions besides immediately moving into a full-time role.
There are a variety of different paths that can be explored. These include going back to school full-time, trade schools, apprenticeships, internships, and SkillBridge fellowships.
