Your purpose is your big-picture reason for existing.

Purpose drives meaning, motivation, and fulfillment in your life. It’s your 30,000-foot view of the next 3-5 years.

Your purpose clarifies where the majority of your time should be spent. It outlines your highest priorities and acts as a filter to remove the things that don't contribute to the life you want.

Purpose Examples:

  • Provide for my family and raise 2 healthy children in a safe and encouraging environment.

  • Use my past experience to mentor others that are in a similar situation as I was, so they don't make the same mistakes.

  • Create artwork that motivates and inspires others to live a better life.

  • Build a photography business that supports my financial goals and captures the most important life moments for my clients.

Clarifying your purpose is a big task. It's okay if your purpose is not readily apparent to you, especially if you never thought about it before.

The more you ponder on the question, the more you'll start to see clues emerge to point you in the right direction.

Creating a purpose statement is one way to gain insight and clarity. You can play around with it until you land on something that feels right.

You may even have multiple statements for different areas of your life (family, work, side projects and hobbies, etc.).

Purpose Statement Outline

My purpose is to (Describe the difference you want to make + Who it impacts) by (Action that will make it a reality).

Example Purpose Statement for Project Trailhead

Project Trailhead’s purpose is to help 10,000 people in the military community transition to civilian life through mentoring and transition resources (like this!).

As with just about everything, it’s okay to mold and evolve your purpose throughout life.
